This year the seafood festival will be held on Friday, October 1 and Saturday, October 2, 2010. Crab Carnival holds a special place in the hearts of all Tidewater community members as a joyous celebration of the Town of West Point's history and a great Fall festival.

This gentle read is a fictional biography of the Brontë siblings which solidly follows with what is known of the life and writings of this family. If you love books written by the Brontë sister’s you will enjoy seeing how Giardina shows us the correlation between their real lives and what they wrote, but this is not the only reason to read this book. Giardina’s portrayal of mid 19^th century England adds to insights that may encourage you to search out more information of this time and the Brontës.

Easy Sunday afternoon read.

I recieve the Novelist Newsletter (David Carr) and thought I'd share a snippet of it here with you. If you have or are considering a Kindle then read on and be informed.

Kindle Recalls 1984 (Joke!)
It's not much of a joke at all. Speaking of copious things, Amazon.com discovered that Kindle editions of 1984 and Animal Farm by George Orwell had been provided by a publisher lacking the rights to do that. So, rather than find a resolution to the problem - provide legitimate texts or send replacement paper copies, for example - Amazon reached out to the readers who had purchased these two items, or rather reached out to their Kindles directly, and erased the books. Who owns and controls a book? When it's an e-book, the answer to that question may be in doubt.
The New York Times reported on July 18:
"Retailers of physical goods cannot, of course, force their way into a customer's home to take back a purchase, no matter how bootlegged it turns out to be. Yet Amazon appears to maintain a unique tether to the digital content it sells for the Kindle. 'It illustrates how few rights you have when you buy an e-book from Amazon,' said Bruce Schneier, chief security technology officer for British Telecom and an expert on computer security and commerce. 'As a Kindle owner, I'm frustrated. I can't lend people books and I can't sell books that I've already read, and now it turns out that I can't even count on still having my books tomorrow.'"
Unless, of course, Mr. Schneier has a library card to count on.
In related news, Bloomberg News reported on July 31 that a high school student is filing suit against Amazon for their actions:
"Justin Gawronski alleges that Amazon.com didn't disclose to Kindle users that it has the ability to remotely delete e-books purchased for the handheld device, according to a proposed class-action complaint filed yesterday in federal court in Seattle, where Amazon is based. .Gawronski, 17, claims the unexpected deletion rendered useless 'copious' notes he had written in the Kindle, because they no longer linked to specific paragraphs. He said he was about midway through reading 1984 for a summer homework assignment at his school in Shelby Township, Michigan."
Poor Justin! I don't know which is worse: Having his copy of 1984 nabbed, or having to read it during summer vacation (and take copious notes as well).
(Are notes anything other than "copious?" I suppose they can be "sketchy," but usually, if notes are something, it's likely to be "copious.")

A visit form Daisy the Pig

The last event of the Summer Reading program was a big hit. Farmer Minor and his beloved pot-bellied pig Daisy, were greeted by an excited group this past Wednesday. Farmer Minor told stories while Daisy grunted her approval.

At the end of the presentation, Farmer Minor allowed the children to give Daisy a hug. I think that was Daisy's favorite part.

Before Farmer Minor and Daisy bid us farwell the staff had their photo-op with them......needless to say we hammed it up.

THE WOMAN IN WHITE

The Woman in White will be the next book discussed by the Friends of the West Point Library Book Club. This novel was first published in 1860, but is still a captivating mystery. The narrative style is interesting, switching from voice to voice, all first person. This is not the sort of mystery that leaves clues for the reader. Instead, I had to find out what was happening even as the story tellers did. I had my guesses, but not enough facts to guess at what was the true story behind Glyde and Fosco. It also addresses not only the evil in the men, but some unexpected good as well. Since most people are a mixture of the two, it makes the novel ring true and more poignant. This is a classic worth reading.

The group will meet Wednesday, August 5th at 7 PM.

Doug McKim lead the music at the Poetry Coffeehouse, Martha and Olivia joined for a few songs.

Poetry prizes were awarded.

Picturing America created new friendships as participants completed the Art Scavenger Hunt.

Friends of the West Point Library held their annual book sale during the West Point Crab Carnival, the first weekend in October.

Old Fashioned Tea Party fostered new members for the Frinds of the Library.

Summer Reading Program brings out the best in our staff.

The FOWPL has been busy planning events for 2009. Here are the events thus far:

Poetry Night COFFEE HOUSE – April 30th in the West Point Library's meeting room. This will be the grand finale for the Pamunkey Regional Library’s Poetry Contest. All poets will be able to show off their talents in coffee house style with good coffee, and great company.

Book Club – The 2nd book discussion will be May 20th in the West Point Library meeting room @ 7:00 pm. The selected book will be Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. This book was chosen to coincide with the Pamunkey Regional Library's BIG READ. Please contact West Point Library(804-843-3244) for more information.

The Man in the Picture

Remember The Picture of Dorian Gray? Reading the above mentioned book brings it to mind. It involves a picture and there are scary aspects to it, but that's where the similarities stop.

It will immediately get your attention. A young man visits his retired professor. While there, the professor tells a tale that has burdened him for ages. He tells a story of mystery, horror and fantasy; that is wrapped around a painting that hangs in the professors rooms. I won't tell you more except to say the ending is very Edgar Allan Poe like.

Read The Man in the Picture for yourself and enjoy a "different" type of ghost story.

West Point Library's March RA project......

RA is in full swing. We've covered Graphic Novels as well as Gentle reads. This month it is our privilege to read any era in History. I've chosen Mary Lincoln's Dressmaker: Elizabeth Keckley's Remarkable Rise from Slave to White House Confidante by Becky Rutberg.
Elizabeth Keckley was a self freed woman who learned her dressmaking skills from her mother, who ironicly chose to stay with her master when given the chance for freedom. Lizzie made her way to Washington D.C. from a pre-civil war south. She fought through the extreme prejudices to become none-other than Mrs. Lincoln's dressmaker. Mary Lincoln had a reputation of being very hard to get along with but Lizzie, always resourceful, found a way to work with and eventually to become Mrs. Lincoln's friend. This is a great read and I've thoughrouly enjoyed learning more about the Lincolns and especially about Lizzie Keckley.

What is Readers Advisory (RA)

"Do you have anything else like this?”

We call them read-a-likes or recommended reads. In our public libraries, librarians are often called on to make recommendations to patrons, sometimes in genres that they normally would not read.

The key to this is to be able to discuss with your patron the attraction of the book(s) you are recommending. Readers’ advisory is defined as, “patron-oriented library service for adult leisure readers,” according to Saricks, a noted expert on the subject.

Joyce G. Saricks retired in 2004 from the Downers Grove, Illinois, Public Library where she started in 1977. As Literature and Audio Services Coordinator in 1983, Saricks, along with colleague Nancy Brown, created a readers’ advisory service there and went on to present more than 100 workshops on the subject for public libraries and systems, and at library conferences. The award-winning librarian received the Public Library Association’s Allie Beth Martin Award in 1989, was named Librarian of the Year by the Romance Writers in 2000, and authored Reader's Advisory Guide to Genre Fiction (ALA Editions, 2001).
